UBC initiatives aim to prevent suicide

This year, UBC researchers and health advocates have made breakthroughs in suicide awareness research.

In November, the UBC Men’s Health Research group launched an art exhibition in downtown Vancouver. The art tells the story of gay and bisexual men who have struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts or who have lost a male in their lives to suicide.

On Friday, UBC will honour former women’s hockey goalie Laura Taylor by retiring her jersey. The Kelowna, B.C., native took her own life in April and family, friends and teammates say the tribute is not only about remembering her life, but also about keeping the mental illness dialogue open.

Join hockey fans at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium this Friday, Jan. 6, to watch a great game of hockey and honour the life of goalie Laura Taylor with a jersey retirement ceremony.

Dr. David Klonsky

Noted UBC psychology researcher, Dr. David Klonsky, published an article on “suicide, suicide attempts, and suicidal ideation”, investigating the relationship between thoughts about suicide and suicide attempts. Through his research, he aims to inform the next generation of suicide inquiry and prevention.
